Buchanan Elementary

At Buchanan Elementary, we know that our bilingual scholars benefit from a school culture that embraces their unique identities and cultural heritages. We take great pride in our diverse student body, and we celebrate the many cultures represented in our school community. Our scholars learn to value their own cultures and traditions, as well as those of their classmates. This understanding and appreciation for diversity helps our scholars to build strong relationships and to become global citizens. In addition, our bilingual scholars benefit academically from the exposure to multiple languages and cultures. They develop a greater understanding of concepts and a stronger academic foundation that they can build on throughout their lives. We are proud to provide an inclusive environment where all of our scholars can thrive.

We believe that every scholar deserves the opportunity to maintain their first language into adulthood, the opportunity to acquire Spanish language skills even if their first language is not Spanish, and the opportunity for a prosperous future in which the number of languages they speak, read, and write is viewed as an asset. Research shows that there are more economic, social, and educational benefits for those who participate in a late-exit bilingual program, and we are proud to provide that for our scholars. Acquisition of the Spanish language supports our desire to ensure every scholar is provided a rigorous, stimulating educational experience. We are committed to preparing our scholars for successful futures in which they can use their bilingualism as an asset.
