César E. Chávez Elementary

Cesar E. Chavez Elementary is more than just a school; it's a community. Our modern neighborhood school celebrates diversity and provides assistance to English Learners to ensure academic success. We are committed to creating and maintaining a high quality, safe learning environment that enables every child to exceed expectations. Our outstanding scholars, dedicated staff, supportive parents, and partnerships all work together to help today's learners develop the skills needed to succeed in tomorrow's global market and community. We want our scholars to thrive in all aspects of their lives; therefore, we believe in fostering every child's inner sense of purpose, independence, and ability to adapt. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of our scholars and in the future of our world.

The teachers at Chávez go above and beyond to ensure that scholars’ needs are met, that parents are involved in their child’s education, and that scholars have a positive experience. With our committed teachers, our learners are challenged and engaged to do their best every day. The Chavez faculty members build trusting relationships with both scholars and parents. Our teachers know that when they involve parents in the education process, they create a support system at home that encourages scholar success. parent conferencing nights, curriculum nights, luncheons, and newsletters are just some of the ways the Chavez teachers reach out to parents. Because of the supportive environment at Chávez, scholars feel comfortable taking risks academically, socially, and emotionally. The result is a group of confident young people who are prepared to succeed in high school, college, and beyond. At Chávez, we believe that every scholar deserves a high-quality education, and our teachers work tirelessly to make that a reality.

Chávez is located in the heart of one of Grand Rapids’ Hispanic/Latinx communities. Spanish is the first language in more than 90% of scholars’ homes, and scholars are supported by a bilingual transition program that teaches them in their native language while they learn English. As a cultural center, Chávez holds programs and events to celebrate diversity and culture. One such program is the annual Latinx Heritage Month celebration. This month-long event features a variety of presentations, performances, and food demonstrations that showcase the richness of Latin American culture. past celebrations have included a talk on Afro-Latinx history, a performance by a local Mariachi band, and a cooking class on Puerto Rican cuisine. By providing such programs, Chávez helps to foster a sense of community and pride among its scholars.
