Auburn Hills, Grand Rapids, MI, USA

The history of the Auburn Hills neighborhood dates back to the 1950s when a small group of African American men were denied housing everywhere except the southeast side of Grand Rapids. In hopes of finding a new location to call home, they set out to develop 20 acres of land now known as the Auburn Hills neighborhood. In response to redlining, which is now the illegal act of denying someone a mortgage loan or credit based upon their race, these four men simply wanted a nice place to call home. Although this particular act was not done in response to a civil rights movement, it did break the housing color barrier in Grand Rapids. These four men set out to accomplish the unthinkable in the 1950s and after repeated attempts by people to stop this development from happening, they succeeded in accomplishing their goals. The neighborhood that you see today is a result of the perseverance by these four men and their dreams.
