7th Street Lofts
7th Street Lofts are one of the most recent condo units to be added to the Grand Rapids area. These condos were originally apartments on the upper level of a commercial building. Originally opened as The Rowe Hotel in 1923, this 1.5-million-dollar project was way ahead of its time and was built as a new "fire proof" hotel. One of the most famous people to spend the night in The Rowe Hotel was John F Kennedy in 1958 when he made a trip to Grand Rapids. Eventually, the hotel would no longer be the most modern and up to date in the city, which is when it was renamed the Old Manor and converted into a retirement home. Serving as a retirement facility, the property was fully functional until it closed its doors leaving the building vacant from 2001 to 2014. After remaining vacant for that period, there was an announcement made in December of 2014 that there was a renovation project being planned for the building. On the top two floors of this historical building, you can find the nine condo units with spectacular views of the city.
Like most condo buildings you see in Grand Rapids today, many of them did not originate at facilities for people to live in.
